Beauty, no matter where it takes you.
On starting Little Bend — and the mentor who told us perfection was never the point.
Welcome to Little Bend Field Notes. This is a space for us to record the good, the bad, and the ugly week-to-week happenings on the farm.
We owe it to ourselves to remember our humble efforts — and to update our loved ones, who are likely our first readers, on a lifestyle choice that includes missing a lot of calls and plans. Realizing Little Bend is our effort to make a bright spot, for us and for you all equally.
Let me just say: no bright spot just arrives when that bright spot is a farm. It takes everything out of you, and then some, even when it’s just beginning.
Permission to begin.
This project is asking us to be bold, to be in the moment, and to be the kind of people who move toward the unknown with excitement.
I had a mentor, James Hubbell, who believed the unknown was where all the best mysteries of life lived. He often spoke about the shadows and corners of the world holding the good magic. He believed in seeking beauty, no matter where it might take you.
He also mentioned that perfection has never and will never exist, so he never paid it much mind.
That feels like the permission we needed.
2026 is our start.
AJ and I have been scheming all winter and early spring to get our flowers out of the field and into the world this season. Thanks for being here at the very beginning. We’ll write again soon — usually from the porch, after the delivery run.
